What is EMDR Therapy?

Sometimes the mind gets stuck. A past experience - whether a single traumatic event or years of accumulated stress - can leave an imprint that shapes how you feel about yourself and the world long after it's over. EMDR therapy was developed to address exactly that.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy recognized by the American Psychological Association (APA), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as an effective treatment for trauma and PTSD. As a licensed mental health counselor (LMHC) and EMDRIA Certified Therapist, I bring a high standard of specialized training to this work. EMDRIA certification (granted by the EMDR International Association) requires extensive supervised clinical hours and a rigorous examination process, meaning you can feel confident you're working with a therapist who has demonstrated true expertise in this approach.

Through bilateral brain stimulation (guided eye movements, alternating tapping, or ear-to-ear audio tones) we engage both hemispheres of the brain to activate your mind's natural capacity to heal. The goal isn't to forget what happened; it's to change how it affects you today. Once a memory has been processed, you'll still be able to recall it, but without the intense emotional weight or negative beliefs that once came with it.

Many clients describe the shift as the memory becoming more distant, losing the charge it once carried. EMDR isn't about erasing the past. It's about changing how the past lives in your body and mind, so you can show up more fully in the present.

How Does EMDR Work?

I work with clients in person at my Kirkland office, and virtually with clients across the greater Seattle area - including Bellevue, Redmond, and beyond.

Wherever you're joining from, the process follows the same four stages:

Goal Setting

We'll identify your goals for EMDR, discuss your history of stressful or traumatic events, and explore the beliefs about yourself that have emerged from those experiences.

Preparing ahead by creating a plan

Next, we'll identify your current coping skills and support system, and develop a plan you can lean on when faced with triggering situations in your day-to-day life.

Reprocessing old experiences…

This is where the magic of EMDR happens. Using bilateral eye movement or other forms of bilateral stimulation, we'll work through the emotions, thoughts, and memories you're ready to heal from.

… To make room for new ones

Finally, we'll focus on integrating your new emotions, thoughts, and beliefs into your life as you move forward.
